Ivan Polunin's Swadesh list recording
Digitisation of Ivan Polunin's Jah Hut Swadesh 200-list elicitation through translation from Malay, collected for and sent to GB on 2 open reel tapes. Recorded by Polunin at Kampung Kol, Ulu Cheka Pahang, Peninsular Malaysia with consultant Along, son of Hitam Misai. Note that GB did not use this wordlist in his 1976 Aslian subgroupings paper, he used his own data. The list is followed by a handful of extra lexical items. The session was recorded over two open reel tapes, the first part of the Jah Hut list is on the top track of Reel 1 (JAHGBAR680000_001A), the second part of the Jah Hut list on the top track of Reel 2 (JAHGBAR680000_002A), the third and final part of the Jah Hut list is on the beginning of the bottom track of Reel 2 (JAHGBAR680000_002B). The Jah Hut list is followed by a Semaq Beri Swadesh list elicitation with the same consultant, the first part of the Semaq Beri list is on the end of the bottom track of Reel 2 (JAHGBAR680000_002B_01) and the second and final part of the Semaq Beri list is on the bottom track of Reel 1 (JAHGBAR680000_001B). The batteries on the recording equipment were running low while recording, this means that the recording speeds up throughout the recording. GB tried to mitigate this during digitisation by periodically manually turning down the speed on the tape recorder, and so the speed drops and picks up again at different points throughout the recording.
